Practica Musica®

Your Personal Music Tutor™

Practica Musica is a complete tutor for both music theory and ear training.  With a friendly coordinated onscreen textbook and hundreds of interactive learning activities it provides a fun learning experience for both beginners and advanced students.

  • Learn to read music. You can learn to read music step-by-step with the help of Practica Musica. Whether you're following one of our organized courses, like the beginner "Course 1" or the extensive course based on the included textbook, Practica Musica will guide you in learning how to read pitches in any clef, rhythms both simple and complex, and will help you understand the meaning of key signatures and other devices used in sheet music. You can practice reading single notes, or whole melodies invented by the computer (so they never grow old), or examples from the library. Practice only the pitches, or just tap the rhythms, or both.

  • Improve your ear. Learn how to recognize the different musical intervals and chords, everything from the basic triads to advanced harmonies.

  • Learn how chords work. Understand how chords are named and how each "works" in building a composition.

  • Interact with the program. Practica Musica is not just a series of pictures - it is built on a real notation engine that puts the notes you play on the staff and evaluates your work. Play an interval or chord in the "practice" window and it will even tell you what you've played.

  • Write your own music. Practica Musica includes simple notation tools you can use to write, hear, and print your own composition. This is especially good for school assignments.

  • Courses of study. Practica Musica's learning activities are organized in several ways: You can follow a specific Course, or choose activities by topic and do whichever interests you the most. Current courses include the beginner "Course 1," 10 simple linked activities that give you a basic overview of pitch, rhythm, and chords, the Exploring Theory textbook course, which starts at the beginning but covers a lot of ground, and the new AP* Prep Course, which is practice for the Advanced Placement Music Theory exam. Or choose any of the many activities available by topic. A list of activities currently provided with the program is available at our Activity Library.

  • Advanced topics. Once you have the basics in hand and can read music and know what you're hearing, you can continue more advanced study with Practica Musica. Learn about altered chords, learn to write music by ear (music dictation), learn the principles of voice-leading (writing music in several parts), do advanced work in atonal or chromatic scales.

  • Track your progress. The "Standard Edition" of Practica Musica comes with 5 user files, one of which can be used by a parent or instructor to gain access to special features. Everyone's progress is automatically recorded in a progress report that can be printed or viewed on screen. (Studios and schools contact us for expanded licenses and student editions).
